TERA is a classic trinity MMO, with three main roles: Tank, DPS and Healer. Each role has its unique responsibilities and challenges, and this guide will introduce new players to each class, as well as help anyone looking to pick another class.

Taken into consideration for tier rankings are factors such as (1) DPS, (2) ping-reliance, (3) difficulty/learning curve, and (4) solo play capabilities. This ranking is different from their max potential ranking.

Archer

Leather Ranged DPS
Difficulty: ✰✰✰✰ (1/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)

Archer is a high damage ranged class that is simple to learn. It both charges skills for big damage, and uses small fast skills. Archer is considered a consistent damage dealer, unlike sorcerer who is a burst damage dealer.
A downside to Archer is its ping reliance. High ping players may notice lower damage than low ping players with similar gear.

PVE Tier: S-Tier
Since this class is easy to learn, even new players can do well with the Archer class. With their high average damage and high maximum potential damage, Archer is a great ranged dps for any player to pick up.

Solo Tier: S-Tier
Archer can interrupt and stagger BAMs very often, which allows it to easily move to the back and safely deal damage. Their mobility and ability to move while charging skills is great for solo play.

Survivability:
Although their base defense is low, Archer has two quick low cooldown invulnerability skills, as well as a dash, that allows them to maneuver the combat field easily.

Race Preference:

  • Castanic: 1% Crit Racial Passive (affected by triple crit glyph)
  • Note: Popori Race is currently bugged, giving the target Focus stacks instead of on the player.

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Berserker

Metal Melee DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✰✰✰ (2/5)

Berserker is a slow hard-hitting melee DPS class with a playstyle that mostly revolves around charging two core skills. Because of this, players may think this may be an easy class to pick up but don’t be fooled: berserker is a difficult class to learn and play.
Powerful when used properly in its maximum capacity, berserker requires planning and forethought to survive. This is the only DPS class with a block, but the most efficient way to make use of this block is at the end of each skill to end animations quicker. Berserker is a heavily gear dependent class, since its damage relies on crits and its block depends on its defense from gear.
Berserker is not as ping-reliant as other classes, though lower ping may help more with survivability. Although berserker may have a high learning curve, many players find their hard-hitting playstyle satisfying.

PVE-Tier: S-Tier (Experienced), B-Tier (Casual)
New and undergeared players may find this class possibly underwhelming and difficult, but at high level play once geared, berserker is a very powerful class. If you can manage to stick with this class, you can be greatly rewarded.

Solo Play: B-Tier
The block makes it easier for berserkers to survive in solo play. Although charging skills eats at your health, you can heal yourself up with vampiric blow. Metal armor also makes berserker tanky at base, and its stun makes getting back time easy.

Survivability:
Berserker’s invulnerability skills cannot interrupt any charging skills, so surviving takes planning, more than simple reaction. Although Berserker has slow movespeed in combat, this can be remedied with several other skills that allows it to move quickly. Berserker can block many attacks if properly geared, although its base hp is among the lowest amongst dps classes.

Race Preference:

  • Castanic: 1% Crit Racial Passive (affected by triple crit glyph)

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Brawler

Metal Melee Tank
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)

Brawler is a high damage tank that is easy to play.
Brawler keeps up their damage and defense by keeping up their growing fury buff. The challenge to keep up this buff can conflict with the tank’s role to support the party.
Brawler is a ping-friendly class, as you can cancel skills with other skills even at high ping.

PVE: A-Tier
Even though Brawler is not the preferred tank class, Brawler is still desired by dungeon parties because tanks are uncommon. Even though Brawler cannot provide party buffs like Lancer, it can still do high damage to help kill a boss faster. This can be an advantage in learning groups.

Solo Play: S-Tier
Their high damage and defense make them very good, if not one of the best, in solo play and Island of Dawn farming.

Survivability: Brawler has a high cooldown invulnerability skill but like Lancer, has high base defense, a block, and lots of ways to reduce damage and self-heal. Brawler also has a cheat death passive, and automatically block in combat as long as they keep up their growing fury buff.

Race Preference: Race Locked (Human Female only)

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Gunner

Metal Ranged DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)
Damage: ✮✮✰✰✰ (2/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)

Gunner is a high skillcap ranged DPS class with a robot friend. It has a third resource that must be built in order to power many of their core skills. The robot attacks alongside you, and can also assist you by pulling the player to its location.
Gunner is a highly ping-reliant class, mostly because of its multi-input skill being a core part of its damage.

PVE-Tier: C-Tier
Gunner has relatively low damage for a DPS class. However it should not be difficult for a new player to be at least average with this class. To excel at this class requires both skill and low ping however

Solo-Play: C-Tier
Gunner does poorly in solo play due to being very slow in combat and being immobile while casting skills. Gunner is not the best class for IoD due to the bams knocking you down a lot while using your high damaging skills.
`
Survivability:
Gunner has a cheat death passive that gives a shield instead, if you take a fatal blow. The robot’s pull allows the player to move across the battlefield quickly with some forethought, while providing invulnerability. The robot can slowly heal the player as well if close enough.

Race Preference:

  • Gender locked (Castanic Female or High Elf Female)
  • Castanic Female: 1% Crit Racial Passive

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Lancer

Metal Melee Tank
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)
Damage: ✮✮✰✰✰ (2/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)

Lancer is the classic tank of TERA’s trinity system.
Lancer has few skills to manage but they have a lot of things to consider in combat as a tank and support: positioning, aggro, buff usage, debuff uptime, damage blocking, and damage dealing. Even though Lancer deals less personal DPS, its support skills significantly increase the party’s overall DPS.
A downside to Lancer is that it is one of the most ping-reliant classes. It can be difficult to chain their skills correctly without low ping.

PVE: S-Tier
Lancer is the meta preferred tank class, with its strong party support skills, and since tanks aren’t very common, Lancers are highly desired in most dungeon parties.

Solo Play: C-Tier
Lancer would only be considered C-tier for Island of Dawn farming (solo play) because of their low personal damage and damage loss from knockdown.

Survivability: Lancer’s backstep is limited by its resolve, but to make up for it, Lancer has high base defense and several ways to reduce damage and self-heal, in addition to their block. Played right, they can live indefinitely.

Race Preference:

  • Elin: Has more mobility than other classes. Longest reach on first hit of Combo Attack and Shield Barrage.
  • High Elf Male: Faster Shield Barrage animations.

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Mystic

Cloth Healer
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Damage: ✰✰✰✰✰ (0/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)

Mystic is a unique healer that has more focus on buffs and debuffs. Its heals are mainly a lock-on and a skillshot, which can be more difficult to use. Mystic provides a unique crit aura, as well as extra debuffs, that make them highly desirable. Mystic must pay close attention to the flow of a fight to know the right time to cast their skills. Mystic summons are not significant, except to provide a buff.
Mystic is not gear dependent as well, and can do well in mid-tier gear, just like Priest. Mystic too is also very ping-friendly and can be played with high ping. However, Mystic will see more quality of life increase with better gear, than Priest would with gear.

PVE Tier: S-Tier
Every dungeon party needs a healer and tank. Mystic is highly desired by many experienced groups for their crit aura.

Solo Play: F-Tier
Mystic’s thralls can be used manage monster aggro safely but mystic’s low damage makes it a poor solo play candidate.

Survivability: Although not as safe as Priest, Mystic still has many ways to survive well. Mystic can cut incoming damage to itself by half, and drop healing motes, allowing it to heal self and others very quickly with some planning. Mystic has only one skill with invulnerability and mobility but it has a very short cooldown allowing you to spam it quickly.

Race Preference: Any

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Ninja

Cloth Melee DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✰✰✰ (2/5)
Damage: ✮✮✰✰✰ (2/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✮✮ (5/5)

Ninja is a fast-paced melee DPS class that must build a third resource to use their high damage skills. Ninja can reduce the cooldown of its skills with auto-attacks. It is the only class that can provide invulnerability to the whole party.
Ninja is a highly ping-reliant class, because of their high auto-attack use and a multi-input skill.

Check out Loriri’s Ninja Guide or Yurai’s Ninja Guide to learn more!

PVE-Tier: C-Tier (Tryhard), A-Tier (Casual)
Ninja’s short cooldown backstab skill makes it very easy to have high back time. This makes it easier for new players to be at least average with this class, but it requires a lot of skill to excel at this class.

Solo-Play: B-Tier
Ninja’s low cooldown backstab and stun skills also make this a decent solo play candidate. Ninja also has several long duration invulnerability skills which can help them survive well if timed right.

Race Preference: Race locked (Elin only)

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Priest

Cloth Healer
Difficulty: ✮✮✰✰✰ (2/5)
Damage: ✰✰✰✰✰ (0/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✮✮ (5/5)

Priest is the classic cleric-style healer with various burst heals, shield and support skills. As the lifeblood of the party, a healer’s main role is to provide heals, buffs, debuffs, damage prevention and utility. Priest is a “safer” healer, with more healing, damage mitigation and utility.
Priest is not gear dependent, and can do well in mid-tier gear, unlike DPS or Tanks that do significantly better in best-in-slot gear. It is also less affected by ping, so even very high ping players can do well with healer classes.

PVE Tier: S-Tier
Every dungeon party needs a healer and tank. Priest is especially desired for learning new content thanks to their great utility.

Solo Play: F-Tier
Their lack of damage make them a poor choice for solo play. Although you can make separate DPS gear for solo play (not recommended), a Priest will shine more in group play.

Survivability: Priest has high base endurance compared to other non-tank classes. Combined with its utility (i.e. shield), heals and short cooldown invulnerability skills, Priests can live indefinitely. In fact, healers can be expected to not die in dungeons.

Race Preference: Any

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Reaper

Leather Semi-Melee DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✮✰ (4/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)

To play reaper, you must first have a level 40 or higher character before you can create one.
Reaper is a very fast-paced DPS class that attacks from a semi-melee range. It is the only class that can use melee skills from a range.
Reaper is another highly ping-reliant class, with high ping making it more difficult to combo skills properly. Reaper is a challenging class to learn, with a very high skill cap that not many will reach. However, its fast and mobile playstyle may appeal to many players anyways.

PVE-Tier: B-Tier
Reaper shine the most in very short fights, due to its long cooldown steroid. When played to its potential, Reaper can be a very strong damage dealer, but reaching it will require low ping, fast reaction and experience.

Solo Play: B-Tier
Reaper’s two stuns and decent mobility make it a decent candidate for solo play. In addition, one of its core skills can heal, allowing Reaper to sustain itself in solo play.

Survivability:
Reaper has a cheat death passive that gives them a second chance at life with a knockdown and 40% life return after a fatal blow. It has a double usage invulnerability skill as well as a unique counter-attack skill that allows it to be safe.

Race Preference: Race locked (Elin only)

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Slayer

Leather Melee DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)

Slayer is a medium-speed melee DPS that is very RNG-dependent to do damage. Slayer’s playstyle revolves around chaining combos and their steroid which gives their main damaging skill no cooldown. This steroid skill has an RNG chance to increase damage by 25%-225%; however, there is no reliable way to trigger how much it is increased by and without the highest modifier, Slayer’s damage can be quite mediocre.
Slayer is a fairly ping-friendly class, being able to chain skills even at high ping.

PVE-Tier: C-Tier
Slayer can potentially do very high damage, as much as a top-tier DPS or even higher with perfect RNG. Because of its unreliable damage due to an unreliable steroid, Slayer ranks lowly in PVE. Other classes can do as much as Slayer’s “perfect RNG” damage, much more reliably.

Solo Play: B-Tier
Slayer’s two stuns and steroid skill makes solo play fairly easy.

Survivability:
Slayer has decent survivability, with its backstab and double roll invulnerability skill. However its medium-slow skills with its long cast times can make it difficult for learning players.

Race Preference:

  • Castanic: 1% Crit Racial Passive, Smooth Animations
  • Elin: Longer Fury Strike distance

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Sorcerer

Cloth Ranged DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✰✰✰ (2/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✮✮ (5/5)

Sorcerer is a ranged DPS class that is easy to play. They charge flashy skills for big burst damage.
Sorcerer is a highly ping-friendly class. One downside is that it is very mana hungry, and you will find yourself often low on mana even with consumable usage and healers help.

PVE Tier: B-Tier
Sorcerer’s rotation of skills is fairly set, so once you understand their playstyle, you just need to worry about positioning and steroid usage. Although Sorcerer is not as strong as Warrior, Archer or Valkyrie, it can still be considered a strong mid-tier class.

Solo Play: C-Tier
Although a safe and strong DPS class, its long cast times and long CD mobility skills make Sorcerer a poor candidate for solo play.

Survivability: Sorcerer has one of the highest survivability, due to skills that negate damage and ignore some mechanics. Although their invulnerability skills have a high cooldown, the fact that it has so many defensive skills, makes it one of the hardest to die on.

Race Preference:

  • Elin: Significantly faster skill animations for Lightning Strike and Fireblast
  • Castanic: 1% Crit Racial Passive

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Valkyrie

Leather Melee DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✮✮ (5/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)

Valkyrie is a strong melee class that is difficult to master. Valkyrie has a third resource to build in order to enter Ragnarok mode, which allows them to deal a lot more damage. Being able to quickly build and utilize this unique class mechanic will be the challenge for Valkyrie players.
This class is fairly ping friendly, with a relatively simple skill rotation to understand. However, because of its class mechanics, dying is very punishing which makes this a difficult class for learning players.

PvE-Tier: S-Tier (Experienced), C-Tier (Casual)
Valkyrie can be the highest damage dealing class, but requires lots of experience and skill to unlock this potential.

Solo Play: S-Tier
Valkyrie’s high burst damage and short cooldown stuns make it a great solo play class. Well-timed dodges allows for more damage and stun resets, which is useful in solo play.

Survivability: Valkyrie has difficult-to-master survivability skills due to its slower speed, but its overall survivability is no worse than others.

Race Preference:

  • Race locked (Castanic Female only)

Suggested PVE Glyphs

Warrior

Leather Melee DPS
Difficulty: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)
Damage: ✮✮✮✮✮ (5/5)
Survivability: ✮✮✮✰✰ (3/5)

Warrior is one of the fastest-paced DPS class with very strong damage potential. This melee DPS has a unique edge system and uses skill combos to build that edge. Warrior is considered a burst dps class, with a powerful steroid to boost your damage every 1.5 min.
This class is one of the most ping-reliant classes, and high ping players may find it slower to combo their skills and build edge quickly enough. Warrior is a unique class that allows you to change stance to become a tank. Although not as desired as Lancers for tanks, Warrior tank is on par with Brawler tanks, though much more difficult to play.

PVE-Tier: S-Tier
Warrior is one of the top DPS classes, second only to Valkyrie in potential. However, Warrior is more friendly for learning and newer classes than Valkyrie is. In terms of difficulty, once the player understands the edge system, Warrior is not a difficult class to play. However, learning to optimize their combo priority quickly may be challenging for newer players.

Solo Play: S-Tier
Warrior’s high damage and low cooldown steroid makes this a great candidate for Island of Dawn and solo play. Warrior’s quick playstyle also allows them to move easily around bosses and dodge attacks.

Survivability:
Warrior is a very mobile class with many invulnerability and movement skills. Their high base defense makes them tanky as well, not just evasive. Warrior has several ways to reduce incoming damage while attacking.

Race Preference:

  • Castanic: 1% Crit Racial Passive (affected by triple crit glyph)
  • Elin: Skill Animation, Farther Skill Reach (Combative Strike range)

  1. Reapesr have a 4 star difficulty? Then why ppl always mock them as ez spacebar class?

    • Because people like to spacebar on this class as new players. To play this class well is difficult, but that doesn’t stop people from doing poorly with it by playing spacebar reaper.

I think you’re a little muddled on the “mocking” of reapers. People like to look down on reapers because new players tend to be attracted to reapers because (a) cool skills and (b) you can skip to 58 quickly once you have a level 40 character. New players tend to suck and have no idea how to play a class well except to spacebar. That’s where the spacebar reaper comes from.

      • I main reaper for years and I have to say I still cant max my performance if i compare my dps to dean or numbnips, I also do pvp and I got mocked alot when I killed someone well, I am happy to know the class I love the most isnt a braindead ez class

  2. Wow didn’t expect so many people to be so outspoken on this guide. In all honesty, the tiers don’t exactly matter neither do the class choices you could roll incredibly derpy combinations and as long as you enjoy it then that’s what will keep you there not how good the class is in certain situations but your personal likes and dislikes in the classes. So the entire tier ranking on this shouldn’t matter in your choice of class or classes as long as you enjoy it you’ll find a way to make it work so common break the meta and enjoy the game 😀

  3. Nobody is noticing my DPS priest solo guide q_q. Ive proven that priest is At least B-tier class at soloing iod bams…. (check my guide at the forums what NOBODY noticed so far) Also archer is S-tier at iod bams. eye->RA Kick->close fire trap->tb->rf and the bam dead even in mid-tier gear with good glyph setup and bitter instead of spiteful. I have 3 archers (4 overall just 1 at other server) and farming them iod. 1 bam takes 6 sec the 2nd 12 then again 6 sec then again 12 cause im using 2 combos cause of skillcds.

  4. yeah ninja ranking makes no sense, same with reaper and mage, if you use (exp) for additional ranking you should know that those two in the right hands make insane dmg. also gunner…..F Ranking? what? C Ranking atleast and exp can ez go A rank…common take some time for this posts.

    • Sorry but the ranking is correct, just check the dps on moongourd. The top Ninjas, Gunners doing around 1.700k DPS while Warriors, Berserkers, Archers, Reapers, “Valkyrie c@ncer cough cough” doing 2.200k – 2.900k DPS even the tanks over DPS them. It’s hard to believe, but that’s the truth. /sad face/ https://moongourd.com/hiscores?area=781&boss=3000&filter=nh&class=Ninja

      • so i looked it up again as you suggested. But i think that is mostly because the people i know which are rly good dont play that class atm, so guess they are misrepresented. But i think in general all classes are relativly close in dps, just rubs me the wrong giving a rly good class an F because the people are too fking leazy

  5. soo… Ninja : PVE-Tier: C-Tier (Tryhard), A-Tier (Casual) so… the more casual u are with ninja the higher ur dps, gotcha!

    • Ninja is a good class for casual players to start out with. You will probably do better with a ninja as a completely new player, than as a warrior or a valkyrie as a new player. Their rotation is pretty simple compared to warrior, and ninja has an easier time with backtime due to low cd decoy jutsu and lots of long duration iframes. It is a good class while learning basic game mechanics.

However, once you have learned basic TERA mechanics and are looking to tryhard and push for higher DPS, ninja may not be a good class for that since their max potential DPS pales in comparison to other classes.
