Patch 77 adds the Fishing system to world of Arborea, little minigame to earn a bit of gold per day … or have it fish automatically.

At it’s core the label says describes it perfectly – catching fish in one of 6 different fishing areas:

Celsian Lake in Westonia

Muricai Ruins in Arcadia

Vexatus Swamp in Ostgarath

Seren’s Lake in Balder’s Refuge

Cutthroat Harbor in Ostgarath

Lake of Tears in Poporia

It’s easy to see where the fishing zones are, due to map having a fish symbol as is shown on right. You also can buy fishing zone teleport scrolls at merchants in fishing zones to travel faster to them.

Each of the different zones is host to different selection of fishes, for more information where is what fish can be caught, refer to tooltips below and their sources.

Near fishing zones you can always find a fishing camp consisting of 4 NPCs:

  • Fishing Supplies Merchant – sells basic tools, basic bait, cooking recipes, fishing zone teleport scrolls
  • Angler Token Vendor – here you can exchange Angler Tokens you gain
  • Association Fishmonger – can exchange results of fishing for gold
  • Federation Resource Manager – can exhcange results of fishing and gathering for Metmorphic Tokens

Basics

If you want to fish, the first thing you need to do is get a fishing rod and some bait. Fishing Supplies NPC near every fishing zones can sell you some Bait I and Old Fishing Rod for cheap.

Bait I

Limit 40.

You must have at least one piece of bait to fish. Bait can be crafted, or purchased from Fishing Supplies merchants and Angler Token Vendors.

Placing a fishing rod on the shortcut tray allows you to control float distance by charging up your cast.

Now that you have rod and bait, you can go swinging to nearest fishing zone. Don’t forget to activate the bait first by right clicking and then you can use your fishing rod like a charged skill: aim in direction of water and hold the button for a while and release.

If you manage to hit the water you will need to wait some time until a fish bites, you can see this from message as shown on right.

Now you have 2 choices: either you can press F and play the minigame to catch the fish, or go afk and let your character automatically fish – which is much slower than manual fishing.

The other downside to automatic fishes, outside from longer time taken, is that it can’t catch “BAF” – Big Ass Fishes. You can see which these are in list of fishes.

Minigame

The minigame to catch a fish is fairly easy, you have to hold F to reel fish in, or let go of it to let fish go free.

Keep fish in the box long enough for it to go completely to the right and you get a catch.

Be aware that the fish will pull with different strength periodically

Higher tiers of fish will put up a marginally tougher fight, mostly their pull is higher. You have to catch the fish in the timer (which you can see ticking under the minigame indicator) otherwise you fail the attempt.

Rewards

Obviously you can gain fish from fishing, but also with each successful catch you will be granted some amounts of Angler Token (depending on the fish’s tier) which you can then spend either at upgrading fishing rods, or at Angler Token Vendor for useful stuff.

Caught fish can be sold to vendors or Fishmongers, dismantled into Fish Filets, or used to compete quests or crafting requests.
Association Fishmongers will purchase this fish for 1000 gold, a significantly higher price than you’ll get from a merchant.

Fishing Rods

Of course, fishing isn’t without any progression – once you caught a few fishes you have an important decision in front of you: what fishing rod do you want to use? At the Angler Token NPC you can buy three different rods at the first tier, with different effects.

Whiskers cost

Whiskers cost table is mostly simple, with one small quirk: to try getting whiskers to next tier, you need 2x whikers of same tier and one of them will get consumed. This makes for … interesting economy, and I’m fairly sure there will be high demand for Whiskers I on trade broker.

II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X Total
Whiskers (consumed) Tier I Tier II Tier III Tier VI Tier V Tier VI Tier VII Tier VIII Tier IX
Pulsating Essence 2 4 6 8 10 14 20 30 40 134

Basic Success % 100% 95% 90% 85% 80% 75% 70% 65% 60%

Baits

Baits are needed to start the fishing, but higher grades of bait can have additional effects on your fishing. Most common effect is to increase chance to catch higher tier fishes – all commonly accesible baits have this effect only.

There are 3 different sources for common baits:

  • Gold: you can get most basic Bait I from Fishing Supplies merchant for gold
  • Crafting: you can craft Bait II to Bait V with Processing skill for varying amounts of Fish Filets.
  • Angler Token Vendor: from this NPC you can buy Angleworms for Angler Tokens

There are 2 NPCs who you can deliver your fishing items (or gathering items in case of one) for in exchange for gold or Metamorphic emblems.

They have list of currently wanted deliveries, and you can trade this item for the prices listed, see screenshot on right. There is limit on max deliveries per day tho – up to 3 items per day to Fishmonger or 200 items per day to Resource Manager. This limit resets each day on 6am

Both of these NPCs can be found near every fishing area.

Fishmonger also accepts Fish Crates, which you can make from Fish Filets by crafting. These are the highest selling price items Fishmonger will trade you.

Each fish crate can be crafted from 5x Plain Stone and 1 metal (or 10 ore in case of I) plus the amounts of Fish Filets listed for 50 PPs.

  1. So where can you catch the other BAF? Darkfin and such.

  2. Thanks for the Fishing overview!
Does anyone have any tips on how to catch a BAF, how to pull? Everytime I get BAF, I fail to pull it.

    • Cook some , it reduces fishing difficulty by 30% and it makes the difference.

    • It took me 4 BAFs to learn. Failed first 2 (haha), got the 3rd and failed the 4th. I haven’t missed a single BAF since.

A tip I could give you is not to try and pull the fish in front of the box. This will waste you a lot of time. It doesn’t even have to be all in but try to keep its head inside by tapping “F” as if you were picking up loot, just press it for a tad longer each time. The more it “kisses” the little box, the sooner the fish will pull back. And when it does pull back (usually all the way back unless it’s close to the end), just press and hold “F” right away until it goes back, then release it before it enters the box and do the loot picking up technique. Then again and keep the F down when it’s near the end, even if it pulls back a little. It shouldn’t take more than 3 pulls back to catch a BAF. If there’s a 4th, just don’t release “F” if the little box is near the end.

Hope this helps, although I guess you’re probably pro by now. ^_^

  3. i just noticed there is a patter that all fish follow, every 3 seconds, the fish will start to pull back, you need to hold F once it starts doing that until it goes back to the box.
also set UI scaling to 150 to see the bar more clearly

  4. In your opinion, which Rod is better to use/upgrade?

    • personally i’d say

Xermetal Rod is the most applicable one especially if paired with the better crafted baits and the higest whiskers you can afford, if you afk fish youll get better catches on avg, whihc get better if you actively fish too

Fairywind rod is for pure afk fishing(and you should be using the baits with higher inventory limits for it, so you wouldnt have to monitor it as often), if you just want a passive gain this is the one ot go for, whiskers alopng with it make this somewhat efficient due to less time needed for catches.

Ash sapling is purely a BAF hunting Rod, since BAF’s are only an option if you actively fish, you should be playing around making the effort efficient, using baits that make it easier to find BAf’s and possibly the buff food athat lowers fishing difficulty.

TLDR: Xermetal if you dont have any specific plan, others if you want to approach fishing in a specific way.

  5. Does anyone know how to complete the fishing achievement “Cleaned Highwatch Pond!” ??
It says you need to acquire a whole bunch of random items like World’s Funniest Jokes and Fishing License and others. Thank you!

  6. fish just can trade with npc .

  7. I’ve got several questions:

    1) Are Fishes tradeable? Even rare/superior ones?

    2) Fishing rods are bind on equip? Cant I use a single one among multiple characters?

    3) Im not sure if I understood it well but the fisher NPC can only buy fishes/fish crates from you up to 3 times per day?

    4) Does the Resource Manager also exchanges your stuffs for gold the same way the Fishmonger does?

    • 1) As you can see in tooltips, no fish is tradeable, you can only trade it in to two npcs, sell to normal npcs, or dismantle

      2) you don’t actually equip the rods to use them, so they aren’t bind on equip. Yes you can use one rod on multiple characters

      3) Yes only 3 times per day

      4) Resource Manager exchanges stuff only for Metamorphic Tokens, up to 200 times per day
